The Dão Wine Demarcated Region

The Região Demarcada do Dão was the first region of still wines to be created and regulated in Portugal, on September 18, 1908, being considered the Portuguese Burgundy.

The region has a geographical area of ​​approximately 376,000 hectares, spread over 15 municipalities in the districts of Coimbra, Guarda and Viseu.

The Dão Wines

Red wines from Dão are characterized by their ruby ​​color with orange reflections. Presenting an intense aroma of ripe fruit. Complex and delicate flavor, with a velvety and full-bodied texture, full of elegance.

White wines are characterized by their citrus-yellow color. Floral, complex and delicate aroma. Fresh, mineral flavor, with an exuberant finish, smooth texture, with a balanced acidity.

The Vineyards

The vineyards that give rise to the Dão wines are mostly located in granite lands that are not very fertile. However, there are small outcrops of shale to the south and west of the region.

The Dão Grape Varieties

The Dão Region is seen by renowned foreign critics as being “one of the most interesting in the world”, considering it the “Noah’s Ark of the grape varieties”, in an allusion to the enormous wine variety in this region.

In the red varieties, Alvarelhão, Alfrocheiro, Bastardo, Jaen, Tinta Roriz, Rufete and Touriga Nacional stand out.

In white varieties, Barcelo, Bical, Cerceal Branco, Malvasia Fina, Rabo de Ovelha and Encruzado stand out as queen white grape varieties.
